NG: Nigeria

  • NG: ‘Investing in cloud technologies key to digital transformation’

For Nigeria to achieve her digital economy agenda, there is need to invest in effective and efficient digital infrastructure, particularly edge cloud technologies, which offer cost savings, capacity to scale rapidly, advance cyber-security features and access to powerful analytical tools for processing big data.

The Director of Operations, Unitellas Edge Cloud, a provider of enterprise-grade edge cloud and IT infrastructure as a service, Blessing Omo, made this known at this year’s edition of the Information Communication Technology and Telecommunication (ICTEL) EXPO held in Lagos.

  • NG: Abuja’s new smart city is luxury redefined

According to the website macrotrends.net, the current metro area population of Abuja in 2022 is 3,652,000, a 5.43 per cent increase from 2021. The metro area population of Abuja in 2021 was 3,464,000, a 5.67 per cent increase from 2020. The metro area population of Abuja in 2020 was 3,278,000, a 5.91 per cent increase from 2019.

The population surge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is being promoted by the insecurity in some Northern states and thereby putting a strain on the housing market in Abuja and its environs. To solve the crisis of rising housing deficit in the capital city of Abuja, a businessman and entertainment mogul, Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has promised to mitigate the housing challenges faced by Nigerians by providing affordable accommodation for residents of Abuja, irrespective of status or class. Cubana and his associates are sinking in $1million on New Dawn & Casa Cubana Golf resort, 86.9 hectares of land that would have 500-600 housing units constructed along the Jabi-Airport road.

  • NG: Apprehensions trail JAMB’s deployment of biometrics, electronic examination

The decision by the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) to deploy biometric identification technology in the forthcoming Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and electronic system in subsequent ones is generating wide spread tension among Nigerians.

Candidates, parents, teachers, and proprietors of schools fear that Nigeria is ill prepared for this new regime of examinations, which involves the use of high-end technologies like Biometrics.

They also fear that the inconsistencies that played up during the last voters registration exercise and the elections due to computation errors may still occur, causing even more anguish among parents who may have staked so much to register and prepare their wards for the examinations.

  • NG: Committee proposes 3 years to issue 180m copies

He gave the assurance that the committee was determined to ensure that it delivered full concise database for all Nigerians.

  • NG: Data gathering by states will not render national ID insignificant

Lagos State is set to begin a comprehensive registration and data gathering of residents within Lagos. Touted as a strategic move to provide more accurate statistics on the residents of one of Africa’s most populous cities, the initiative expands the compelling argument for why governments at all levels must automate the processes of gathering data for economic planning. In 2010, Edo State had embarked on a similar drive. It set in motion the Edo State Citizens Identification Card as a first step to knowing the number of people domiciled within it and also to provide the framework for more informed planning and engagement of the citizenry via eGovernance.

What Edo and Lagos states are putting across is that the basis for planning by Nigerian governments in the 21st century has to be a more accurate way of determining people and other resources domiciled within a geographic space. It is unacceptable to plan on imagined statistics when ICT tools are readily available to achieve near accuracy on figures and therefore put across a much more comprehensive and strategic development plan.

The experts, who gave the advice in Abuja yesterday at the conclusion of a two-day “2015 E-Government Summit”, based their submission on the recent disclosure by President Buhari that an estimated $150 billion had been stolen from the country and stashed abroad in the last 10 years by some unscrupulous government officials and other Nigerians. According to them, adoption of e-government will, to a larger extent, help in curbing cases of financial fraud in government circles.

In selecting GITEX to showcase the investment opportunities in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Nigeria, we had a lot to consider in that the event is a big one, which is usually well-attended. This year, there were over 60 countries and over 3,700 companies in attendance. It is usually a large event and NITDA was the official country partner this year.

  • NG: Improved traffic management: A case for a smart city

Smart Cities are not exactly new phenomena. Yet for many cities across the globe, the implementation of smart cities remains largely in the experimental stages. Others have blazed ahead and achieved great success. Smart cities have been used to solve issues relating to public administration, environmental and waste management, utilities, security, contactless payments, and healthcare. Barcelona, Singapore, Zurich (Switzerland), and Oslo (Norway) now sit comfortably atop the 2021 IMD-SUTD Smart City Index (SCI). Ranked 115th globally out of 118 countries in the SCI, Lagos for its part has only begun to skim the benefits of inroads into smart city technology. But for all its promise, the myriad infrastructural challenges typically associated with a developing nation’s commercial nerve center, hold the city firmly in its vice. Still, there is nowhere to go but up.
