  • UK: e-Government via Digital TV now available on ntl

    The National DigiTV e-Government project has announced that all the Local Authorities piloting the e-Government-on-digital-TV Starter Kit are now available on ntl: as well as Sky and Telewest.

    Services went live on July 12th, 2004, a little later than hoped for due to a ntl: system upgrade, but the National Project has got the services up and working now.

  • UK: Five Tyne & Wear Councils jointly offer services via digital TV channel

    The five Tyne and Wear Councils arenow offering local services to the public through interactive digital TV.

    Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland councils and Nexus have worked together to launch a regional channels of council services on interactive digital television.

    The number of mobile phone users subscribing to mobile streamed or broadcast TV services is expected to reach 65 million worldwide by the end of 2010, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

    It's an interesting new media which could have great use in delivery of e-Government services in future - moving on a step from current public sector interactive TV services still at a early stage.

  • UK: NHS Direct plans TV expansion

    The service is growing in popularity and will become more readily available on digital TV, say officials

    The NHS advice service is looking to expand its digital TV availability, it said on 29 September 2005.

    NHS Direct which is available by phone, internet and on the Sky TV platform is continuing to gain in popularity, a spokesperson told Government Computing News.

  • UK: Ofcom consults on digital TV platform guidelines

    Since 1997, BSkyB has been subject to regulation regarding the terms and charges for broadcasters and operators of interactive television seeking to make their content available on the BSkyB satellite platform. For delivery of e-Government services via digital TV, this platform is a current cornerstone.

    This regulation of Technical Platform Services (TPS) was established under Ofcom's predecessor, Oftel. The pre-existing regulatory regime has now been carried forward under Section 45 of the Communications Act, which requires Ofcom to ensure that third parties have access to those services on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. Digital terrestrial and cable digital platforms are not currently subject to this regulation. Oftel last published guidelines on how it would interpret this regulation in the event of a dispute in 2002.

  • UK: Open Source Community TV Launched

    Innovative project promotes community-based digital services

    An open source solution enabling councils and registered social landlords to deliver video-based interactive eGovernment services is set to be made available through national government procurement frameworks in October.

    Since November 2003 residents at the Carpenters Estate in Newham, East London, have been testing the prototype system to access a range of digital services.

  • UK: Tyne and Wear councils offer interactive TV service

    The five councils of the county of Tyne and Wear have joined forces with Nexus to launch one of the country’s first regional channels of council services on interactive digital television.

    Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland councils joined forces with Nexus, the transport executive in the area, to set up the interactive offering.
