  • South Korea to Help Vietnam Establish State Data Center

    Korea will help Vietnam establish a state information and technology center, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced Sunday.

    The two countries have started a feasibility study for the Vietnamese Government Information Data Center (GIDC) to determine whether or not one would be practical in the Southeast Asian country.

  • State agencies’ IT application rating goes public in Vietnam

    The Department of Information and Communication of Hanoi, for the first time, has made public the IT application rating of state agencies and offices in the city.

    According to Mr. Pham Quoc Ban, Head of the Department of Information and Communications, the rating will help each state agency assess its own IT performance in comparison with practical requirements so as to work out more proper IT application plans in the coming years.

    The Customs Department, State Treasury and Department of Planning and Investment are among the top units in the rating. Meanwhile, Tay Ho and Son Tay districts earn high scores for the implementation of infrastructure deployment and policies for IT application.

  • Symposium reviews Vietnam e-government development

    A conference and exhibition on e-government started yesterday in Hanoi, aiming to review an e-government development scheme in Vietnam and seek measures to develop e-government.

    The two-day Vietnam e-Government Symposium 2006, themed “E-government – the bridge for government, businesses and citizens,” is organized by IDG Vietnam and the Hanoi Department of Post and Telematics.

  • Taiwan signs deal with Vietnam to help establish e-government system

    Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry signed a consulting contract in Vietnam Tuesday with the Hanoi municipal government to develop and deliver e-government solutions to the city.

    Hsiao Mei-li, director of international affairs at the institute, said Taiwan will help the Hanoi government establish a 5-10 year plan to gradually phase out the city's offline documentation system and introduce Taiwan's successful experience from the past 30 years in building an e-government system.

  • Teams pitch smart cities solutions for VN

    Fifteen teams from around the world were selected to pitch their smart cities solutions for Việt Nam at the Smart City Innovation Challenge (SCIC) Demo Day in Hà Nội yesterday.

    The Smart City Innovation Challenge, launched in July this year, sought smart city solutions in 12 key focus areas identified by the city governments and the smart city steering committees of Việt Nam.

  • Ted Osius vows US support for smart city building in Vietnam

    The US stands ready to sponsor, support and share its experience in building smart cities with Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular, US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius said.

    Ted Osius made the statement at a workshop on Vietnam-US cooperation in developing smart cities jointly held by the Vietnam Ministry of Information and Communications, the US Embassy in Vietnam, and the US Trade and Development Agency in Hanoi on June 21-22.

  • Thales inks biometrics and smart city deal in Vietnam, discusses ethical facial recognition

    Thales has signed an extensive deal with Vietnam’s VNPT to accelerate the country’s digital transformation with biometrics, smart city and other technologies.

    The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed in the presence of the Prime Ministers of France and Vietnam, outline an ambitious set of goals around digitizing Vietnam’s economy, strengthening its cybersecurity and telecommunications infrastructure, and supporting digital identity. ‘Digital Identity & Biometrics’ is one of four “key digital topics” identified in the arrangement.

    As reported in Vietnam News, the UK and Vietnam are enhancing cooperation between the two nations in advancing the digital economy and digital transformation.

    On Monday, Vietnamese Minister of Information and Communications Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, and the UK’s Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Chris Philp, signed a Letter of Intent on cooperation.

  • US supports Vietnam’s IT development

    The US Department of Commerce (DOC) supports the project to turn Vietnam into a strong information technology (IT) nation and promote the application of e-government.

    This was confirmed by representatives from DOC at a reception for Minister of Information and Communication Le Doan Hop during his visit to the US from June 9-14.

    The visit aimed to promote Vietnam’s development potential in IT and Communication field, promote bilateral trade in ICT between the two countries, especially in training human resources and creating favourable conditions for IT companies to access the market and seek partners in the US.

  • Viernam: Step taken on path to e-government

    The Vietnamese government officially launched its web site last week to offer information online about Vietnam, the government’s first step toward working online with residents and implementing e-government.

    The website at, www.vietnam.gov.vn or www.chinhphu.vn, has been developed by the Government Office and will provide online transactions for residents and government agencies. It will also provide information on government management, economic and social reports, and gather information from lower-level government agencies.

  • Viet Nam climbs 14 spots on UN E-governance readiness standings

    Viet Nam has gained more 14 spots in the UN 2008 E-governance readiness index from the country’s position in 2005, climbing to the 91st among 192 ranked countries.

    The 2008 UN E-Government Readiness Survey, released on January 5, is the fourth edition of the index, and assesses 192 UN member states on their application of information and communication technologies to serve and interact with citizens.

  • Viet Nam jumps five spots in global IT index

    Viet Nam has been ranked 81st in the ICT Development Index for 2011, a jump of five places from the previous year's index, the Ministry of Information and Communications announced yesterday in a conference on the sidelines of the Mobile Viet Nam 2012 trade expo.

    "The wireless sector, especially 3G, has been the vital factor in the development of the Vietnamese telecommunications industry in the context of globalisation" said the head of the ministry's Authority of Radio Frequency Management, Doan Cong Hoan.

  • Viet Nam needs to promote IT sector

    Viet Nam has made great progress in applying IT in governmental agencies to provide services to citizens, jumping from 126th in 2006 to 90th in 2010 in the United Nations' ranking report on IT.

    The rankings were based on electronic readiness, web assessment, human resources, infrastructure and e-participation.

    "Viet Nam should promote IT progress, increase efficiency of e-government and administrative reform in parallel with investment and development of IT applications to help the country become a strong country in ICT," Nguyen Trong Duong, head of the Ministry of Information and Communications' ICT Industry Department, said at yesterday's 9th Viet Nam e-Government Symposium Conference.

  • Viet Nam plans to be IT powerhouse

    Viet Nam plans to become one of the world’s most powerful countries in the information and communication technology industry, according to Le Doan Hop, Minister of Information and Communications.

    Speaking during an online talk on IT strategy on Sunday, Hop said Viet Nam should become one of the 70 top ICT countries from 2015 - 2020.

    Viet Nam ranked 112th out of 191 countries in the 2004 e-government readiness rankings of the United Nations Public Administration Network (UNPAN) with an index of 0.3378, down 15 positions from the previous year.

    Local officials and entrepreneurs in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday exchanged experiences with experts from Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and the Asia Foundation on implementing e-government and e-administrative services in enterprises.

    The new year will be one of promoting digital transformation across all industries on a national scale. It will be the first year of implementing new strategies on digital infrastructure, data, technology industry and technology enterprise.

    Minister of Information and Communications Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng made the prediction at a conference held on Wednesday.
