  • IN: CM Maryam Nawaz announces free WiFi service to 22 Punjab cities

    In line with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision for a digitally connected Punjab, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has significantly expanded its public Wi-Fi initiative, doubling its coverage across the province.

    According to PSCA officials, the number of free Wi-Fi access points in Lahore alone has risen from 230 to 430.

    The service, previously available in 11 districts, now spans 22, including key areas such as Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, Attock, Hasan Abdal, Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree.

  • IN: Delhi to get 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots by February next year

    The Aam Aadmi Party government today said that it would provide 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots by February next year across the national capital.

    The Government is also contemplating providing Wi-Fi in 5,000 buses of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and also lay a common fibre infrastructure in the city.

    Delhi Government in association with the Delhi Dialogue Commission’s Wi-Fi Task Force today concluded a three-day consultation with various system integrators, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), hardware and software providers as well as ISPs and Telecom operators.

  • IN: Delhi: Wi-Fi connectivity for secretariat soon

    To make e-governance people-centric, the government is planning to make the Delhi secretariat at IP Estate Wi-Fi-enabled. The test trials are over and, if the project is executed successfully over the next few months, there are plans to extend Wi-Fi connectivity to all government offices involved in public dealings.

    The information technology department of Delhi government is preparing to call for tenders from parties interested in installation and maintenance of the facility on payment basis or in exchange for advertisement rights on the connecting page at the time the users log in to access the internet using Wi-Fi.

  • IN: Finally Odisha Secretariat gets WiFi connectivity

    Finally Odisha Secretariat gets WiFi connectivity. The Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC) has ensured that the State’s power corridor is fitted with 150 powerful antennas which would enable offices of various departments of the Government to have WiFi connectivity.

    The WiFi system has been installed with an investment of `50 lakh, which also covers all the conference rooms. People attending conferences at Secretariat would be connected with internet facilities.

    A senior Smart City official said that on a daily basis, over 900 people use the free public Wi-Fi service offered by the Smart City Mission at important places across Panaji.

    Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd said that it has installed 500 access points for public Wi-Fi. These locations include maximum footfall areas like marketplaces, road stretches, key junctions, the vicinity of government offices, and recreation spots such as parks, lakes, educational institutes, and religious places.

  • IN: Govt of Tamil Nadu inaugurates 200 + public Wi-Fi hotspots powered by ACT Fibernet

    In its efforts towards accelerating the adoption of digital technologies the state, Government of Tamil Nadu today launched 224 public Wi-Fi hotspots in Chennai in collaboration with ACT Fibernet. The Wi-Fi hotspots were launched in the presence of Shri Udhayanidhi Stalin, Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and Youth Secretary, DMK and Mr. Sandeep Gupta, Chief Operating Officer, Atria Convergence Technologies Ltd and other dignitaries, and officials.

    Installation of Wi-Fi hotspots across the city is a great way to keep more people connected and give them access to the internet. This launch marks the beginning of the Tamil Nadu Govt.’s vision to establish a large-scale public wi-fi network for its citizens.

  • IN: Govt to set up 7.5 lakh public Wi-Fi hotspots by 2018-end

    The government has decided to give a major push to Wi-Fi deployment across the length and breadth of the country and will facilitate the setting up of as many as 7.5 lakh public-internet hotpots by the end of next year.

    The rollout — mainly focussed at providing high-speed internet in semi-urban and rural areas — will be carried out by private operators such as Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and state-owned BSNL, apart from internet service providers (ISPs), Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said.

  • IN: Gujarat: 10 free WiFi zones to come up in Ahmedabad

    The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) that had announced to provide more than 45 free WiFi spots in city under its Smart City plan by August has now decided to at least start a trial run on 10 of these by December 30.

    Ahmedabad has lagged behind as Rajkot has been providing internet access to its citizens since February. For internet connectivity and fibre optic network, civic authorities of Ahmedabad have allotted a budget of Rs 239 crore including CCTV cameras for surveillance.

  • IN: Gujarat: Govt offices to have Wi-Fi for public soon

    Gujarat government has decided to have wireless internet services at district collector, DDO, municipal commissioner, police commissioner and other government offices and visitors too will have access to the wireless services.

    The government has initiated a plan to increase the speed of GSWAN (Gujarat State Wide Area Network) from the existing 34 MBPS to 500 MBPS to give boost to the e-governance initiative. In the next few months, people will have free internet access through Wi-Fi at public offices.

    The authority has also covered the entire sports complex with CCTV cameras and the space can now be monitored from the GMDA command and control centre at its office in Gurugram’s Sector 44

    The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has turned the Tau Devi Lal stadium into a free Wi-Fi zone by installing ‘hotspots’ at seven locations as a pilot project, which if successful will be replicated across the city. GMDA officials said that the free Wi-Fi hotspots are currently being used by officials and government staff and they will create a backend soon, which will allow people to use it for free provided the pilot project is successful.

  • IN: Haryana: Karnal municipal corporation plans free Wi-Fi service

    With a view to staking a claim for the status of smart city for the chief minister's home constituency, the Karnal municipal corporation (KMC) is contemplating introduction of free Wi-Fi service in the main shopping areas of the city.

    If the project materialises, it would be first city in Haryana where a municipality offers the free Internet service facility.

    Municipal commissioner Sumedha Kataria told Hindustan Times on Friday that the facility would help in sensitising the local residents about the concept of digital governance.

  • IN: Jammu and Kashmi: Srinagar sets up first public WiFi zone; to get smart poles with WiFi hubs

    Srinagar plans to introduce 50 smart electricity poles with integrated WiFi hubs, electric vehicle charging points and advertising displays. The poles will use LED street lights, solar charging panels, CCTV cameras for surveillance, and environment sensors for pollution and weather monitoring. The pilot scheme at Zero Bridge has proved popular, with 4,000 exclusive connections to the network daily.

    Following the success of its first public WiFi zone at the popular Zero Bridge across the Jhelum river, Srinagar will now get about 50 more smart electricity poles, officials said.

  • IN: Jammu and Kashmir: JSCL To Expand Free Wi-Fi Service In Jammu City Under Smart City Mission

    To attract tourist footfall and benefit students as well as the business community, the Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL) has decided to expand its free Wi-Fi service to 20 more locations under the Smart City Mission.

    In this regard, JSCL has signed an agreement with LMES to provide the Wi-Fi hotspots at 20 more locations under Phase-II.

    The agreement was signed and exchanged between the Chief Executive officer (CEO), JSCL, Avny Lavasa and Director LMES. Under the expansion plan, the free Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed in areas like Government Medical College Jammu, Railway Station Jammu, Canal Road Jammu, Jammu University, Channi Himmat, Trikuta Nagar, Shastri Nagar and others.

    Turn Bangalore into a free Wi-Fi hub, provide free tablet computers and laptops with 3G connectivity to students studying in government colleges and schools and connect colleges with a high speed data network.

    These are among the recommendations made by Karnataka Information Communication Technology group, headed by TV Mohandas Pai, in its report submitted to chief minister Jagadish Shettar on Tuesday.

    In a major push toward digital inclusion, Mira-Bhayandar is set to become a ‘Free Wi-Fi City’ early next year. The announcement was made during a review meeting held at the MBMC headquarters, attended by Minister Pratap Sarnaik, MBMC Commissioner Radhabinod Sharma, and senior civic officials.

    Minister Sarnaik said the initiative aligns with the state’s vision of promoting technology-driven development.

  • IN: Nagaland: 30 WiFi hotspots installed at Kohima town

    State government Saturday launched 30 WiFi hotspots in Kohima under the Smart City project (phase-I), at Regional Centre for Excellence in Music & Performing Arts (RCEMPA) Jotsoma. The WiFi service was launched by advisor Urban development and Municipal Affairs Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire.

    The WiFi hotspots will be available for free for a period of three months after which it will be charged at a minimal cost. Each user will be provided free WiFi service for one hour in a day.

    Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has recently reintroduced its free Wi-Fi facility across the state capital of Odisha. After being temporarily discontinued during the Covid-19 pandemic, the service has now been expanded to cover an impressive 500 locations, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy seamless connectivity throughout the city, said a TOI report.
