  • BS: Govt announces partnership for downtown WiFi coverage

    A WiFi zone that runs from Arawak Cay to the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge is on the way through a partnership between Aliv, the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Ministry of Tourism, officials announced yesterday.

    The groups signed a three-year agreement to launch a “smart cruise port.”

    Officials said the installation process began yesterday and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of this year.

  • BZ: Rural WIFI A "Soon-Come" Reality

    In August of last year, the governments of Belize and Taiwan opened Belize's first Information and Communication Technology Center.

    The promise then was to introduce new technology such as broadband wireless service, and a mobile telephone system - to be used in rural areas.

    Today, the Taiwanese government was living up to its promise when it officially inaugurated a new WIFI infrastructure and IP Telephone system.

  • CA: British Columbia: Abbotsford: Gatekeeper Launches Broadband Wi-Fi on School Buses for Enhanced Distant Learning, Announces Initial $560,000 Order

    Gatekeeper Systems Inc., a video and data solutions provider for public transportation and smart cities, has launched Gatekeeper Mobile Wi-Fi System, a new enhanced distant learning initiative that enables 4G and 5G broadband access for students. The Company has also received a purchase order of approximately C$560,000 from a school district to equip their fleet of school buses with the Mobile Wi-Fi System. The purchase order also includes a 12-month services contract that is renewable for up to five years.

    The Mobile Wi-Fi System provides 4G or 5G internet connectivity for students and authorized users while the bus is transporting students or while the bus is parked in a neighborhood for the purpose of providing internet access to students who do not have suitable connectivity at home. Data is routed through the school’s content filters and network infrastructure to ensure that students are provided with a safe internet environment and that firewall-protected school content is accessible.

  • Can a Wi-Fi Mesh Connect Emergency Responders?

    There is untapped potential in the wireless signals generated by routers around town. Emergency responders around the world may one day use a mesh network knitted together from privately owned network routers as a means of backup communication, according to a recent study performed in Germany at the Technical University in Darmstadt.

    Kamill Panitzek and colleagues used an Android application to sniff out wireless networks in a small rectangular area in the center of the city of Darmstadt. In the 0.19 square-mile area, researchers detected 1,971 wireless routers, 212 of which had public, unencrypted signals. In the event of an emergency making cellphone and data network service unavailable, emergency responders could use the wireless signals of homes and businesses to communicate.

  • Canada: Hamilton tests citywide wireless project

    Smart meters will connect to Internet

    Hamilton may soon become one of Ontario's most high-tech municipalities, offering wireless Internet access throughout the city - all a lucky byproduct of the provincial government's plans to conserve energy.

    The province's initiative requires standard residential electricity meters to be replaced with new smart meters - meters that offer two-way communication and realtime monitoring and adjustability. Installation will be done progressively and is expected to take until at least 2010.

  • Cashless: Central Bank of Nigeria, service providers in talks on cloud services

    The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it is talking with service providers to create cloud Wi-Fi hotspot services to facilitate seamless electronic payment (e-payment) services in the country.

    The initiative, which would be driven by banks, according to the CBN’s Head of Shared Services, Mr Chidi Umeano, would enable customers access e-payment services in areas where the over 60,000 activated Point of Sale (PoS) terminals are clustered.

    The Digital 21 Strategy Advisory Committee has welcomed the Government's plan to provide Wi-Fi facilities at Government premises.

    At the committee's meeting today, members said the project will help uphold Hong Kong's status as a leading digital city because the wider availability of Wi-Fi networks will facilitate the delivery of e-government services through wireless and mobile channels.

  • China: Hong Kong: Proposal to encourage Wi-Fi development

    The Government will work with the information and communication technology industry to formulate a proposal encouraging the development of Wi-Fi applications for leveraging on the Government's free Wi-Fi services.

    Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Frederick Ma said he expected through this collaboration initiative more Wi-Fi applications will be made available for consideration by the Government and community for adoption, and better electronic delivery of public services will be facilitated.

  • CN: Hong Kong gets more public Wi-Fi hotspots

    More universities and hospitals providing public Wi-Fi on their premises.

    Residents and visitors in Hong Kong can now get easier access to free Wi-Fi. The number of hotspots for the public Wi-Fi.HK service has increased to 12,000.

    “The number of Wi-Fi.HK hotspots has been increased from the original 5000 at the launch of the scheme [in August] to the current figure of over 12,000", said a spokeperson from the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer.

  • CN: Hong Kong Launches 'Next Generation Gov-WiFi'

    The government of Hong Kong launched a new public wireless internet system for residents and visitors on 21 December. The Next Generation Government Wi-Fi (GovWiFi) Programme will expand the coverage of the wireless network and modernise the technology used to provide a better service.

    The new programme extends wireless service to more than 40 new locations across Hong Kong, including popular tourist attractions, locations of high patronage and new types of premises such as law courts, civic centres and police report rooms.

  • EU will offer free Wi-Fi in villages and towns

    If you’re in the Wi-Fi network installation business in Europe, you might be about to get extremely busy. The head of the politico-economic union said its member states will be investing dramatically in Wi-Fi connectivity. The reason: to “empower” its subjects.

    “Every European village and every city” will be equipped with a total of an equivalent of 134 million dollars-worth of non-payment, free wireless Internet by 2020.” The installs will occur around the “main centers of public life,” Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Union’s executive body, said in a state of the union address a few days ago.

  • European Parliaments adopts new EU scheme for free Wi-Fi

    The European Parliament has on Tuesday approved a resolution that creates a financial scheme for local wireless access points in the EU, free of charge and without discriminatory conditions.

    The budget of the WiFi4EU scheme is EUR 120 million between 2017-2019. It will support the installation of state-of-the-art Wi-Fi equipment in the centres of community life, such as parks, squares, public building, libraries, health centres, and museums.
