    Tools for managing Web content are as varied as the agency sites they support

    The nature of government Web sites has changed dramatically over the past five years. The number of Web pages published by state, local and federal agencies has grown exponentially, and the expectations of citizens, businesses and other government agencies have grown just as much.

    On top of that, the need for compliance with regulations for everything from record retention to accessibility highlights the need for more than just simple editing and posting tools.

  • E-government toolkit for developing countries now available

    A toolkit to help policy makers and senior executives in developing countries on how and when to start successfully e-government projects was recently published by UNESCO and India’s National Informatics Centre (NIC) as a contribution to promote transparency in public administrations and democratic processes.

    The toolkit, that is available on CD-ROM, aims to demystify the concepts behind e-government and strengthen the understanding of all those involved in the planning and execution of e-government projects.

  • OWL swoops down on the Web

    Systems integrators will have a new Web language at their fingertips when they develop next-generation search tools and Web services.

    The Web Ontology Language, known as OWL, was approved by the World Wide Web consortium and now joins Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Extensible Markup Language (XML) as standards for publishing data online.

  • UK: e-Toolkit Success at e-Pay for Efficiency Exhibition

    The launch of the Integrated Document Solutions (IDS) e-Toolkit at the e-Pay for Efficiency exhibition was declared a great success by all IDS staff who attended. The event, held on Tuesday 16 November 2004 at The Conference Centre, Westminster, London, attracted almost 100 UK local authority personnel, the majority of whom are directly involved in getting their organisations e-Government enabled.
  • UK: eGovernment benchmarking pilot launched

    New Project to measure take-up of high-volume services

    A new project to benchmark the popularity of local eGovernment services has been announced.

    The Volumetric Guidance pilot will run between the end of October and February 2006 and measure the volume of services delivered across all electronic channels. It is currently looking for local councils to participate in the project, capture the data and add them to the ESD-Toolkit.

  • UK: National eService Delivery Standards partners with ESD Toolkit

    The National eService Delivery Standards (NeSDS) Programme has partnered with the ESD Toolkit to deliver the benefits of the eService Delivery Standards to all Local Authorities, in line with the requirements of the transformation agenda as part of the NeSDS rollout phase.

    The NeSDS Programme published 10 eService Delivery Standards following wide ranging consultation and have created a self-assessment tool hosted by ESD Toolkit, allowing Local Authorities to assess themselves against each of the eStandards.

    The value of increased traffic from Directgov to council websites and the associated efficiency savings can now be measured through a benefits calculator, available free to download from this link in Excel format.

    Navigating local council departments can often be a nightmare.   • UK: Toolkit for smart cards released by e-Government National Project

    The National Smartcard has launched a smart toolkit offering local authorities all the help they need to meet Priority Outcome G12 by setting up a multi-application smart card scheme.

    Produced by Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council, the toolkit provides a step-by-step guide to setting up a smart card scheme to enable councils to improve access to services for citizens.

  • USA: FirstGov launching site to help federal webmasters

    The Firstgov.gov team at the General Services Administration on Sept. 29 will launch a portal with information to help federal webmasters improve their sites.

    The Web Content Managers Online toolkit, at www.webcontent.gov, will feature laws and regulations, best practices, online discussion areas, frequently asked questions, and a calendar of events and deadlines, all related to the building and maintenance of federal sites.

  • USA: New Web Toolkit Unveiled Offers Recipe for Success

    FirstGov.gov, Uncle Sam's most successful federal Web site, provided a sneak preview of an online toolkit that will enable all federal agencies to replicate the success of this award- winning site.

    This toolkit was demonstrated on the occasion of FirstGov.gov's fourth anniversary and selection for a prestigious Innovations in American Government Award. The kit will guide federal Web managers as they design U.S. government Web sites to be the most citizen-focused and visitor-friendly in the world.
