    The Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department launched today, the online motor vehicles first registration tax system which will enable motor vehicle traders to make online applications and access necessary information needed to become registered importers and distributors in Hong Kong.

    Under the new system motor vehicle traders can request motor vehicle tax assessment and other documents the Transport Department requires for vehicle registration.

    In addition, with system interface with the Transport Department, the Customs will be able to process different types of application in parallel, such as the Import Return and tax assessment, which will cut down the processing time for various applications.

    The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer recently launched two new mobile applications - “GovHK Notifications” and “GovHK Apps” – as part of their efforts to further enhance citizen engagement and service delivery through the use of mobile technology.

    The “GovHK Notifications” app enables users to be well informed about important notices or “alerts” from the government in a timely manner.

    The Notifications are classified into categories such as air pollution alerts, food alerts, weather warnings, special traffic news, immigration information, leisure facilities, tax rates and rent, and student financial assistance.

    The Hong Kong government has announced a commitment to cloud computing to re-provision its central IT infrastructure and services over the next five years.

    Hong Kong's Office of the Government CIO has formulated a pan-government strategy setting out the major programmes to facilitate the Fragrant Harbour administration's transition to cloud computing.

    The commitment has come from Hong Kong's acting secretary for commerce and economic development (SCED), Gregory So, to a special meeting yesterday (Monday, 21 March 2011) of the Legislative Council Finance Committee on the policy areas of communications and technology.

    Hong Kong Government Chief Information Officer, Daniel Lai, has highlighted cloud computing and mobility as two catalysts for revolutionising e-government services.

    The usage rate of Hong Kong e-government services has risen dramatically, reaching 12.9 billion information searches and electronic transactions by 2012 - a 2.7 times increase from 2010.

    “We have established a government cloud platform (GovCloud) to develop shared electronic government services. It will comprise of core infrastructure and a shared pool of computing resources that can be dynamically provided to e-government services, based on individual demand,” shared Lai.

    Residents and visitors in Hong Kong can now get easier access to free Wi-Fi. The number of hotspots for the public Wi-Fi.HK service has increased to 12,000.

    “The number of Wi-Fi.HK hotspots has been increased from the original 5000 at the launch of the scheme [in August] to the current figure of over 12,000", said a spokeperson from the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer.

  • CN: Hong Kong Govt awards US$16.3 mil contract for GovCloud

    The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) of Hong Kong awarded a HK $127 million (US $16.3 million) contract for the implementation and operation of the Government Cloud Platform (GovCloud).

    GovCloud is a large-scale IT infrastructure project initiated by OGCIO last year. In an interview with FutureGov last year, Victor Lam, Deputy Government CIO, explained that the government private cloud would be used to host common apps for shared use for Hong Kong government departments.

    The country’s Information Services Department (ISD) has released an iPad application which provides details of government projects, social development and country performance indicators.

    The free app, which supports English and Chinese, is quoted as being “a useful reference source” with which to analyse Hong Kong’s social progress over the last year.
