    Analysts believe that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has not only come to stay but become part of our life. For that, the earlier we prepare for the new technology the better chance to be among the developed ones in the future.

    Countries and institutions have resolved to embark on ICT programmes, spending billions of dollars and re-investing large shares of their profit to improve on ICT skills and networks because of the realisation of its benefit.

    The bill seeking to amend the 1945 Evidence Act to make electronic and computer-generated evidence admissible in court sponsored by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Drugs, Narcotics, Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes, Senator Sola Akinyede (PDP, Ekiti South), has been generating wide interest due to its timeliness and relevance to modern challenges.     The current Evidence Act being operated in Nigeria has on many occasions, embarrassed the judiciary, especially as it concerns tendering computer print-outs evidence in court. It was therefore a thing of joy when the Senate gave an indication recently that it wants to amend the controversial Act to be in tune with modernity.

  • Nigeria: Expert Urges Govt On E-Health Integration

    President of Society for Telemedicine and e-Health in Nigeria, Dr. Olajide Adebola, has advised the Federal Government to come up with strategies that will ensure integration of e-health into the national health care system.

    Adebola, who spoke in Lagos recently, said such strategies would help in coordinating the use of telemedicine and e-health tools in national health system.

    He said government must put in place a policy that would enable the private sector take advantage of e-health services in the country.

  • Nigeria: Expert Wants Applications for E-Govt Defined

    SOFTWARE expert and managing director of ProGenics Corp Limited, Mr. Tony Udoh, has called for the definition of criteria for development of application programmes that would leverage the electronic government (e-govt) strategies.

    This call was contained in his paper at the recent meet of national e-government stakeholders, held at the nation's capital, Abuja, entitled "Application programmes and platform as a prerequisite for national e-Strategies".

  • Nigeria: Expert Wants Portal for FG e-Payment Programme

    The Managing Director, Neptune Software Nigeria Limited George Agu, has asked the federal Government to implement an electronic invoicing portal for the effective monitoring and implementation of its electronic payment programme.

    Speaking on the e-payment directive given by the Federal Government to all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to henceforth pay all contractors and staff salaries through e-payment using banks, Agu said government needs to establish an e-invoicing portal to monitor compliance.

  • Nigeria: Experts Storm UCH Ibadan to Evaluate Success of Telemedicine Pilot Project

    Experts from various parts of the country on Monday converged the College of Medicine of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan to evaluate the success of the Telemedicine Pilot Project and design the way forward to advance the healthcare delivery.

    Addressing the opening session, the Minister of Science and Technology, Alhaji Alhassan Bako Zaku disclosed that the success recorded by the pilot project of Telemedicine had been acknowledged by the various state governments in the country leading to the directive given to their various ministries of health to set up their networks to reach the rural areas and enhance referral systems.

  • Nigeria: FCC May Consider Data Card for Workers

    The Federal Character Commission (FCC) isconsidering a proposal to issue a data card for all workers in the ministries, departments and agencies.The card is a multipurpose application device that can be used for manpower management, budget planning for workforce as well as retirement planning for the country.

    Speaking at the visit to the NigComSat Limited head-quarter at Lugbe Abuja, FCC chairman, sub-committee on Com-munication and Broad-casting Alhaji Muhammad Ari Gwaska who made the plans known said its time for Nigerian workers to have an electronic management systems.

  • Nigeria: FCT launches personal computer purchase programme

    The Federal Capital Territory FCT, has launched a pilot programme for its 4,000 employees to own personal computers.

    The programme, which is christened “Government Assisted PC Purchase Programme (GAPP)” is one of the FCT administration’s programmes aimed at building an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) workforce.

  • Nigeria: Federal Capital Territory - Boosting Revenue Via E-Register for Vehicles

    Sustained effort by the Federal Government and other stakeholders in the nation's financial and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors to move Nigeria's payment system from cash dependent platform to the globally acceptable electronics driven alternative appears to be yielding dividends in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    Revenue collection is one of the principal means by which a government finances its expenditure. Funds provided by taxation have been used by states and their functional equivalents throughout history to carry out their many functions.

    The method of revenue generation has to be looked into if we have to improve on revenue collection and accounting. Therefore, the importance of IT in revenue generation activities cannot be over emphasized.

  • Nigeria: Federal Government initiates 3-prong approach to IT development

    The Federal Government through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has initiated a tripod approach to developing information technology in the country.

    This effort, according to Cleopas Angaye, director general, NITDA, is geared at refocusing the sector to drive the nation’s economy through implementation of the IT policy passed in April 2007.

    The approach which is currently under implementation is geared towards human capacity development, infrastructure capacity building and institutional capacity building.

  • Nigeria: Federal Government partners submarine cable firm for enhanced internet services

    The Federal Government has entered into a broadband access partnership with the first submarine cable company in West Africa, Main One Cable Limited, to ensure effective delivery of internet services.

    Consequently, the partnership would save over 65 per cent of previous charges spent by government to expand its networks in over 3,000 office locations in the public service.

    President Goodluck Jonathan said the partnership would enhance more reliable internet connectivity for effective and efficient service delivery in the country.

  • Nigeria: Federal Government urged to step up e-Government

    The Nigerian Internet Group has urged the Federal Government to step up the e-Government initiative to promote accountability and transparency in governance.

    The President of the group, Mr. Lanre Ajayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview in Abuja on Tuesday that e-Government would simplify delivery of services to citizens and eliminate bottlenecks in government business.

    E-Government entails government using technology to provide services and information to individuals and businesses.

  • Nigeria: Federal Road Safety Commission automates system, builds data call centre

    The Federal Road Safety Commission says it has built a new data call centre to improve its efficiency.

    Unveiling the system on Thursday in Abuja, the Corps Marshal Mr. Osita Chidoka, said that the move was to complement and adapt the Federal Government’s e-government policy.

  • Nigeria: FG assures on ICT development

    The Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs. Grace Ekpiwhre, has said that the ministry is set to boost the knowledge-based economy through the development of Information and Communication Technology.

    Ekpiwhre, who revealed this at the closing ceremony of the National Information Technology Development Agency-sponsored ICT training programme for schools in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, said that initiatives being executed by the ministry were also aimed at a comprehensive human development of Nigerians.

  • Nigeria: FG Begins Rollout of E-Govt Project

    The National eGovernment Strategies Limited (NeGSt), the vehicle created by the Federal Government to implement the Nigerian eGovernment project will over the coming six months embark on a systematic rollout of its product offerings, its Managing Director, Otumba Felix Obada, has said.

    Obada who made this announcement at the recent NeGSt shareholders agreement signing ceremony said, by linking the services of various ministeries, agencies, parastatals and businesses in the country through a national portal the NeGSt will for the first time bring synergy to the nationwide implementation of various IT projects.

  • Nigeria: FG Flags Off NYSC E-Strategy Project

    The Federal Government yesterday kicked-off an e-readiness capacity building project for staff of the National Youths Service Corp (NYSC), as part of efforts aimed at transforming operations of the 34-year-old graduate youth programme.

    The e-NYSC programme, is aimed at computerising NYSC operations and bringing it into the information super-highway to ease registration and inspection processes of the scheme.

  • Nigeria: FG introduces eForm

    Government business and all other transactions with the public are to be digitalised through the eForm initiative to facilitate efficiency and effective service delivery.

    The Head of Service of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, made this known in a circular issued to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Abuja.

  • Nigeria: FG leads 15 stakeholders to sign agreement on eGovernment initiative

    To streamline government transaction processes and strengthen the avenues for citizens to interact with the government, the Federal Government last week, led other fifteen stakeholders, including strategic and financial partners, to sign the shareholders agreement on the Nigerian eGovernment initiative.

    The Nigerian eGovernment initiative, refers to deliberate efforts by the Federal Government of Nigeria to deliver government information and services online via the internet to her citizens in order to ensure that the citizens and businesses are served better and cheaply.

  • Nigeria: FG stops cash, cheque payments

    In a bid to further actualise e-governance, the Federal Government has halted payments for all services by cheque or cash. To this end, the Central Bank and commercial banks have been directed to stop honouring cheques and cash payments for its services.

    Further, all cheques-in-transit must get to either the Central Bank or the commercial banks by June or they will not be honoured. These disclosures were made yesterday in Abuja by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, who said they were in pursuit of government’s e-payment initiative to curb corruption in government businesses.
