  • Qatar: Technology brings quick exit

    Processing of exit permits will be done in two minutes for resident workers who would want to leave the country for any valid reason thanks to automated processing introduced by Hukoomi at www.gov.qa, Qatar’s online gateway to government information and services.

    Mohamed Saad Eddin, an employee at MZ company in Qatar, said the processing of such permits, which took two months can now be processed in two minutes and this has made travelling easier for him. Saan Eddin’s testimony was published at the website of Supreme Council for Information, Communication and Technology (ictQATAR).

To keep up with this advancement, the Ministry of Interior re-produced its website in a new version that provides locals and expatriates alike with a whole host of traditional services in a modern high-tech delivery medium, which serves to save time, money, and energy for the users.

  • Qatar: Yes, ministry: Raya to install 101 services in eight months

    Raya Holding has just eight months to put 101 government services online at the Qatar Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture — a process it said would normally take years.

    Raya has been contracted to automate the ministry’s 101 services in 27 different government departments from January to September 2006.

    Ali Sakr, general manager of Raya Gulf, said the project will be a tough challenge.

    Broadband accounts grew by 90 per cent in 2006 to constitute two thirds of the total Internet accounts in the country.

    Qatar's Internet subscriber base has been growing at strong rates along the past four years. In 2005 Q-Tel added 16,445 total subscribers (a growth rate of 45% in 2005). The total Internet accounts market further grew by 32% in 2006.

    Qatar Petrochemical Company was named among the most digitally-innovative organisations in the Middle East and North Africa, yesterday.

    Showing the strong potential for digital transformation, ICT spending by Qatar's commercial sector is set to grow by 47 percent, from 1.9bn in 2015 to 2.8bn in 2019, according to a recent report by the Qatar Ministry of Transport and Communications. In the wider region, the Middle East cloud infrastructure services market is set to more than triple to 7.5bn by 2021.

    Since its launch in 2003, Qatar's e-government portal has grown in popularity by helping individuals and institutions cut through red tape and bureaucracy, officials told Al-Shorfa.

    Through "Hukoomi", people can apply for work and tourist visas, request health cards, pay bills and taxes, register at the University of Qatar, independent schools and the Digital Islamic Library and make payments to zakat and retirement accounts, among other tasks.

  • Qatar’s Digital Landscape Revealed

    ictQATAR, Qatar’s government entity under the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology in its latest report titled ‘Qatar’s ICT Landscape 2013: Households and Individuals‘ has revealed that Qatar’s Internet penetration is among the best in the Arab region and on par with ICT-advanced countries like South Korea and the UK.

    On average, a household in Qatar owns three mobile phones, two computers, and one smartphone, and people are using this technology to access the Internet in ever-greater numbers. The report showed a continuing trend toward more convenient, portable forms of technology in Qatar, with a surge in the use of handy, versatile smartphones over the last few years.

  • Qatar’s e-govt services win UN recognition

    Qatar’s development of e-government services has been recognised in the United Nations (UN) e-Government Survey, which saw the country rise to number 27 in the online service index rankings, a significant improvement from its previous ranking of 90 in 2010. The survey also placed Qatar at number nine in the e-Participation index for 2012.

    The online service index measures development of online service delivery to citizens and businesses through the Internet and other digital means, while the e-Participation index is indicative on how governments create an environment in which citizens can be more active and supportive of their governments.

    Instead of customers logging into their accounts with their username and password each time they open the QIB Mobile App, they can now use their Face ID to login in a simple and secured manner.

    Smart Cards may soon replace identity (ID) cards currently being issued by the interior ministry to expatriates as well as citizens. Their scope may subsequently be extended and one could use a Smart Card as a driving licence or even as a passport.

    Smart Cards are already in use in some developed countries where nationals as well as residents use them, instead of passports, to come in and go out of the country. "The possibilities of using a Smart Card for different purposes are endless," said Haytham Abduljawad, programme executive manager of the e-government project in Qatar.
