  • USA: Review of Draft Framework Data Standards

    The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) invites comments from all interested parties on draft framework data standards. The public review period begins July 30, 2004 and ends October 30, 2004.

    These standards were developed through the Geospatial One-Stop e-Government initiative. They establish common requirements to facilitate data exchange for seven themes of geospatial data fundamental to many different GeographicInformation Systems (GIS) applications. The seven geospatial data themes are: geodetic control, elevation, orthoimagery, hydrography, transportation, cadastral, and governmental unit boundaries.

    It used to be that a government agency's outreach department only had to worry about posting information on that agency's Web site. Now, that department has a variety of conduits it could use — ranging from Twitter.com, YouTube.com and Facebook.com to mobile phones. To this end, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has started to develop the process of developing a set of standards that governments could use for harnessing these Web 2.0 and social networking technologies.

    A global extensible markup language (XML) standards body has set up a committee to agree standards for e-government - but analysts have expressed doubts that it will deliver.

  • Zypries fordert Standards für elektronischen Rechtsverkehr in der EU

    Bundesjustizministerin Brigitte Zypries (SPD) hat Voraussetzungen und Standards für einen europaweiten elektronischen Rechtsverkehr gefordert.

    Vor allem die Standardsetzung sei eine ganz wichtige Aufgabe, sagte die Ministerin am Mittwoch auf der Konferenz "Work on E-Justice" in Bremen. Einheitliche Standards seien in der EU zwar nicht möglich, allerdings sollten mit Hilfe der IT-Unternehmen gemeinsame Schnittstellen erarbeitet werden. So soll unter anderem der EU-weite elektronische Austausch von Strafregisterauszügen beschleunigt werden. Bisher werden solche Verfahren schriftlich bearbeitet und nehmen daher oft mehrere Monate in Anspruch.
