Azerbaijan is joining the list of governments adopting distributed ledger technology to promote efficiencies.

Osman Gunduz, Chair of the Azerbaijani Internet Forum (AMF), announced the country will start using blockchain on the information systems and registries of the Ministry of Justice.

The E-Government Education and Training Center of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Microsoft Azerbaijan company on establishment of the Internet of Things laboratory.

The document has been signed by the Rauf Jabbarov, Director of the E-Government Education and Training Center of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan and the Member of Board of Directors, General Manager for Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan at Microsoft CIS company Sarkhan Hashimov.

New generation electronic ID cards will be introduced in Azerbaijan starting from September 1.

In the new generation ID cards, which are more secure than older ones, the electronic carrier-chip has been inserted, which includes the citizen's residence, family status information, as well as the identity card owner's biometric photo and other personal data.

Transition to new generation ID cards will further increase cybersecurity in Azerbaijan, Elmir Valizade, deputy minister of transport, communications and high technologies of Azerbaijan, told reporters in Baku Sept. 5.

He said the integration of e-signature and authentication certificates into new ID cards is considered a progressive step.

Azerbaijan is working to align its ICT infrastructure in accordance with European standards, Ramin Guluzade, Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies of the country said at a meeting dedicated to the role of multi-gigabit GEANT network in the integration of Azerbaijani science and education in Europe.

Guluzade noted that, within the framework of the Eastern Partnership program, a number of research institutes and universities of Azerbaijan have joined the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA).
