If there was a quintessential centerpiece of smart city ingenuity, Singapore might be it. The city-state, with its diverse population of about 5.6 million residents, has been active since the beginning of the smart city movement a few decades ago. Singapore started with big data and analytics to extend smart city advancements into its core infrastructure. The city has plugged into energy and sustainable buildings, and analytics programs that can forecast traffic jams; it closely monitors waste and looks for new ways to adapt the latest technology into civic services. Fueling the use of technology is the nation’s need to maximize use of its roughly 427 square miles and its sizable population.

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore has developed CorpPass, a new log in portal for businesses.
The rollout by IDA aims to enhance security and privacy among organisations, as well as individuals who make use of the alternative SingPass account.
CorpPass allows business executives to apply for grants, or declare import, export goods. Businesses are leveraging SingPass accounts for corporate transactions at the moment, however, IDA plans to segregate the accounts to avoid mix up and protect individual data.

Singapore scored gold in IDC Asia/Pacific’s 2016 Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (Scapa). The island-state came up as the biggest winner in South-East Asia with three awards.
The winning Singaporean projects were the Smart Yuhua Residential Estate under the Smart Buildings category; the Initiative to Develop Singapore as a Global Hydrohub in the Smart Water category; and The Next Generation National Trade Platform under the Economic Development Category.

Two bills were passed on Tuesday (Aug 16), which will pave the way for the establishment of the Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Government Technology Agency, or GovTech.
With the two new Government agencies, the existing Infocomm Development of Authority of Singapore and the Media Development Authority will see some of its functions merged. The new IMDA will help develop the infocomm sector, while also regulating it. GovTech, meanwhile, will help drive digital transformation efforts in the public sector.
