Transforming Government since 2001

Singapore government is blocking internet access on all workstations used by public sector employees from May 2017, in a move that throws up critical questions regarding its smart nation and e-government services.

Singapore has launched a national government services digital platform, which will increase convenience by only requiring users to enter their information once.

MyInfo, officially launched earlier this month, does away with the need to provide verification documents for every government transaction, as had previously been the case.

It’s hoped the system will save time, avoid mistakes, and eventually do away with the need for physical documents as verification to complete transactions.

A new repository, called MyInfo, will consolidate the personal data of Singapore residents and provide it on request to auto-fill government e-service forms.

"Citizens often ask why they need to give different government agencies the same data about themselves repeatedly for separate transactions," Mr Peter Ong, the head of the Civil Service, said at the Digital Government Exchange 2016 yesterday, when MyInfo was launched.

The Government needs to remove the "inconvenience and friction" in making e-transactions, he said.

Originally part of Singapore’s National Computer Board set up in 1981, NCS has provided ICT and communications engineering services in Singapore for the past 30 years. eGov Innovation speaks with Lai Weng Yew, Vice President of Business Application Services at NCS, to discuss digital transformation in the public sector, smart city initiatives and NCS’s recent projects.

Q: What is NCS’s role in Singapore’s Smart Nation Initiative?

As a leading ICT service provider in Singapore for the past 30 years, NCS has played a part in defining Singapore’s e-government landscape. The systems we built and delivered have helped drive greater efficiency and productivity, enable the delivery of one-stop services and transform citizen engagement across the public sector.

We agree with Mr Kwan Jin Yao that it is important to take into account the usage and feedback on government e-services and applications ("Consider take-up rates, privacy issues in e-govt push"; Tuesday).

Many agencies monitor satisfaction with their e-services through feedback mechanisms such as user surveys.

In the 2015 Annual e-Government Perception Survey, 97 per cent of users were satisfied with the overall quality of government e-services.
