Various chambers of commerce across Saudi Arabia have been considering introducing the online document legalization system aimed at achieving greater efficiency and ease of interaction.

“Electronic document certification will surely go a long way in simplifying our procedures, making them more accessible and user-friendly than before,” an official at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce & Industry said yesterday. The move is also intended to ensure greater security of electronic signatures of members.

According to a government official plans for an e-government portal in Saudi Arabia are advanced, and an announcement will be made shortly.

Dr Mohammed Al-Suwaiyel, Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, has said that the e-government portal will include a transaction and billing engine to facilitate citizen payments to public agencies.

The Kingdom’s march toward e-government will soon culminate in the announcement of a portal, according to a top official.

“We’re engaged in creating a portal for e-governance and the same will be officially announced soon,” Communications and Information Technology Commission Governor Dr. Mohammed Al-Suwaiyel said here yesterday.

In a step toward e-government, Saudi chambers of commerce and industry will implement the new electronic authentication and attestation system next month, according to an official.

Dr. Fahd Al-Sultan, secretary-general of the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CSCCI), told Arab News that the new electronic system is undergoing a trial run for the last month within the three main chambers (Riyadh, Jeddah and Alkhobar) and will officially be implemented next month.

As part of the Kingdom’s introduction of e-government, the Interior Ministry says the long-awaited smart Saudi IDs and family cards, expatriates’ resident permits and driving licenses will be introduced “soon”.

Dr. Khaled Muhammad Al-Taweel, director of the National Data Center at the ministry, said the new electronic cards with high security features would prevent forgery. The new cards will have a luminous strip where information is stored.
