KE: Kenia / Kenya

  • KE: Telecoms bet on e-health services to grow revenue

Health services provision is the next battle frontier for mobile firms as they seek new revenue streams to cushion against falling voice earnings.

Safaricom and Telkom Kenya have embedded health services in their product offering, a move the two firms expect will boost their bottom lines.

Rural population is the key target in this new offering that is administered through virtual clinics, attracting "modest" consultation fees. The mobile operators claim users will make huge savings on money spent on travel and logistics associated with hospital visits.

  • KE: The brand-new £11bn 'tech city' being built in one of Africa's most prosperous countries

The city's architectural design integrates solar power, rainwater collection and utilisation into its infrastructure.

Africa is increasingly positioning itself as an attractive investment destination in the global tech landscape.

With a population of over one billion and a substantial talent pool, the continent represents a significant financial opportunity for investors.

  • KE: The incredible £11bn smart city that will transform major African country

The major development is expected to boost the country's economic growth.

A huge multi-billion-pound technology city is being developed in one of Africa's most well-known countries. Konzo Technopolis, also known as Silicon Savannah, is a £11 billion project by Kenya's Government that involves the construction of a planned city designed to strengthen science, innovation, and technology, thereby boosting the country's economic growth.

The development is being constructed 39 miles south of Kenya's capital, Nairobi, across a 5,000-acre land. The groundbreaking for the tech hub was done in January 2013, but construction work faced various delays. As of now, the city is being built in phases, with Phase One nearly complete.

  • KE: Uhuru defends biometric registration of NYS cohorts

President Uhuru Kenyatta has defended the biometric registration of community youth engaged in National Youth Service (NYS) projects (cohorts) saying it will help guard against corruption at the bedeviled institution.

President Kenyatta who spoke in Kisumu on Sunday, said the registration will ensure that the “ghost worker,” phenomenon is a thing of the past.

“This is to ensure that only those who work are paid,” he said at stops in Obunga and Kondele.

  • KE: Uhuru to Launch Civil Servants Biometric Census On Monday

The biometric registration of public servants in both national and county governments is scheduled to kick off on Monday as the government starts an audit process to rid the public sector of 'ghost workers'.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will officially kick-start the Capacity Assessment and Rationalization of the Public Service (CARPS) Programme alongside Deputy President William Ruto at their respective offices while Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero will launch the exercise at his City Hall offices.

  • KE: Varsity Don Asks State to Use ICT to Boost Skills and Wealth Creation

Mt Kenya University vice chancellor Prof Stanley Waudo has asked the government to exploit the untapped ICT potential in Kenya.

He said this will improve knowledge and wealth creation. In a speech read on his behalf by his deputy Prof John Nderitu at the International Conference on Emerging and Future Information Communication Technologies at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi last Wednesday, Waudo said MKU offers elearning and virtual learning.

  • KE: Want to register your baby? There’s now an app for that

Kenyans living in rural areas can now digitally register their newborn babies, saving them long trips to Government offices and health centres.

This follows the development of a mobile-based civil birth registration platform that allows for real-time creation of birth records from any part of the country.

The new system, which has been developed by software company SAP, utilises a combination of biometric scanning and cloud storage to create a database of all children born in Kenya.

  • KE: We Will Exploit ICT Fully, Asserts Kibaki

The government is committed to maximum exploitation of science and technological innovations for the realisation of sustainable and equitable development in the country, President Mwai Kibaki has asserted.

The president emphasised that both the Constitution and the country's development blue print, Vision 2030, explicitly recognised the critical role played by science and technology in achieving sustainable national development and global competitiveness.

Speaking when he officially opened the first African Science, Technology and Innovation Forum in Nairobi, the president said that Kenya had spearheaded world-leading technologies in such essential areas as mobile banking and financial transactions.

  • KE: We'll Rope in Private Sector in Laptops Outlay - Kaimenyi

The government is now seeking financial support from the private sector to fund the laptop project - a flagship of President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration. Addressing an ICT integration forum on Monday, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Jacob Kaimenyi said the project required a lot of funding.

"I am alive to the fact that integration of technology in the curriculum requires huge financial outlay which government alone is not able to provide," he said. "For this reason, we recognise the vital role of the private sector in complementing the government's efforts in ICT infrastructure development. I take this opportunity to ask you to support the ministry in the implementation of this unique programme."

  • KE: World Bank gives Sh4.6 billion to boost integrity projects

The project also involves establishment of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in e-government, immigration and population registration system, improving information and cyber security.

  • Kenia arbeitet an Anbindung Ostafrikas an globale Internet-Backbones

  • Kenia: Plan to Rid Ministries of Computer Junk is On

Phase one of an electronic government strategy is to begin by June this year.

Research done by mHealth Alliance and released by UN office in Nairobi, reveals that more advanced mobile technology can do even more, such as checking on patients, keeping records, improving diagnosis and treatment in the field, and letting community health workers consult general practitioners and specialists for guidance.

  • Kenia: How technology can be used to improve government services

There are as many ideas on how to make technology work in government as there are experts on the new subject of reinventing government.

E-government, or electronic government, uses modern technologies such as the Internet and the mobile phone to give improved services to business and the people.

Currently it is possible to apply for a government job or clear imported goods through the Public Service Commission and the Kenya Revenue Authority websites.

  • Kenias Handy-Ambulanz

  • Kenya adopts WAN in State offices

The government will soon commission a project which will see all its offices interconnected through the fibre optic Wide Area Network (WAN).
