  • KE: Hospitals set for electronic record keeping

    The Government is set to roll out an Electronic Medical Record in over 600 health facilities countrywide to hasten service delivery in the health sector.

    Speaking in Mombasa during the commissioning of an EMR system at the Port Reitz hospital, health cabinet secretary, James Macharia said ICT is the backbone for economic growth in the world.

    “The ministry is making out major strides in the realization of a digital world. We have planned to set up fully functional data centre, implementing of district health information system and health workforce system,” he said.

  • KE: ICT expected to fuel GDP growth says govt

    CIO Africawrites that according to Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto, the country’s government expects ICT to contribute a two to three percent increase in total contribution to the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

    Ruto is said to have made the statement at the opening of the 20th East African Communications Organisations Congress on Friday 28 June.

    He is quoted as saying, “Our belief in ICT is of the magnitude that has never been seen anywhere in the world, an idea whose time has come, and when it has come, not even a mighty army can stand on its way.”

  • KE: ICT key to growth and development, says Poghisio

    The government is committed to ensure advancement of ICT in the country, Information minister Samuel Poghisio has said. Speaking yesterday at a Diani hotel during the ongoing Connected Kenya summit, Poghisio said escalation of technology will change the lives of Kenyans and help in the growth of the country’s economy. “ICT development will solve life problems since there is a co-relation between information and communication technology and poverty reduction. ICTs induced growth should be reinforced by targeted policies for effective poverty reduction,” said Poghisio. He said there is good infrastructure in place and urged local entrepreneurs to take advantage of it and ensure they invest and come up with innovations to create competitive growth of the region.

  • KE: ICT Ministry bets on policy review to grow sector

    The Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) is reviewing its national policy guidelines.

    The new rules are expected to take into account new developments in the industry over the last eight years.

    ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru said the review has been necessitated by rapid changes in the sector, as well as efforts to meet the ministry’s performance targets as per its 2014-15 performance contract.

  • KE: ICT Ministry Seeks To Recognize ‘Gig’ Economy In Draft Digital Strategy

    The Ministry of ICT and Youth Affairs has drafted the Digital Economy Strategy.

    The first draft went live a few weeks ago. It is developed following Kenya’s adoption of the Digital Economy Blueprint for Africa that was launched by President Kenyatta in May 2019.

    On the whole, the Draft Digital Strategy is based on six pillars: Digital Government, Digital Business, Infrastructure, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Digital Skills and Values and Digital Inclusion.

  • KE: ICT Ministry striving to protect ICT consumers

    Kenya’s ICT Cabinet Secretary, Dr Fred Matiang'i, has assured the Executive Office of President Uhuru Kenyatta that his Ministry is doing everything to protect ICT consumers.

    While replying to the President's Senior Political Advisor, Nancy Gitau, on August 14 and in a letter copied to the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) Secretary General, Dr Matiang'i said in part: "I have taken note of the issues raised with respect to ICT sector and wish to reiterate that the Ministry has put in place an institutional, policy and regulatory framework that addresses most of the concerns outlined in the (Cofek) paper including universal services obligations and access to ICT's, appropriate legislation on privacy, merger of ICT institutions (establishment of the Kenya ICT Authority) to minimise duplication of roles and resources, commitment to expand broadband infrastructure, infrastructure sharing in communications services delivery, etc."

    Education minister Mutula Kilonzo has said information communication technology will now be part of the teaching curriculum in all levels of education.

    The minister said ICT will be taught from early childhood to university. The minister was speaking at Imale School in Makueni during the launchof the Multi Choice Resource Centres.

  • KE: IEBC targets 18 million in e-voter listing

    Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials target 18 million voters in a fresh electronic voter registration to start in July.

    The 12.4 million voters in the registers of the IEBC’s predecessor, the Interim Independent Electoral Commission will be done away with.

    The Sh3.7 billion registration programme to be undertaken through Biometric Voter Registration is the most complex since independence, and will reduce errors such as double registration.

  • KE: Infrastructure key for ICT rollout – experts

    The government has been asked to enact proper policies before embarking on introducing ICT education in public schools.

    Speaking at an education forum on ICT on Tuesday, Kenya Publishers Association Chairman Lawrence Njagi said poor infrastructure has led to slow uptake of technology.

    “The ICT infrastructure has simply been inadequate and in most cases absent. We are talking about availability of power, trained teachers and machines themselves,” he lamented.

  • KE: Internet access is no longer a luxury – Fibre-optics could leap-frog Africa into the future

    It is early morning in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital. The traffic jam along Ngong Road, one of the city’s main feeder roads, stretches for kilometres as matatus (taxis), buses and cars try to make their way into the central business district. At the top floor of Bishop Magua Centre complex, sitting just off Ngong Road, Antony Njoroge is already at work, typing away at his computer, a mug of freshly brewed coffee beside him. He is the founder of RevWeb, a local software development company.

    Njoroge works out of iHub, a working space that hosts developers, designers and others working with technology software. It is one of the most well-known tech hubs in Africa. In just four years since its founding, the iHub has over 13,000 members in its online and off-line community, held close to 500 events and had over 50 companies calling it home.

    The Kenya government on Wednesday launched a program that will transform the way the state agencies and departments deliver service to its citizens.

    Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the main aim of the project is to improve the quality of life through fast tracking of delivery of public services and projects.

    “The transforming the Kenya program will utilize 100 day Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) cycles as well as information technology (IT) to ensure that services promised are delivered.

  • KE: Jacob Kaimenyi launches ICT curriculum ahead of laptop project roll out

    Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has expressed the need to have Teachers trained in capacity building in information and technology skills ahead of the roll out laptop program.

    He said that having computers in the classroom without trained teachers will not benefit the pupils.

    “I want to assure them that technology will not replace teachers, but will add value to their practise. The Ministry is acutely aware that the success of the implementation of ICT integration programme in primary schools will depend mainly on teacher training in ICT integration skills and changing their attitude to accept change,” said Kaimenyi.

  • KE: Kiambaa MP prepares teachers for free laptops

    Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange yesterday took all education players in his constituency through an ICT induction in preparation for the free laptops to be provided by the Jubilee government.

    Koinange said teachers should be well-equipped in ICT to teach pupils how to use computers.

    Richard Kimani, the director of ICT-based teaching and information management at Inoorero University, said he has developed and tested ICT syllabuses.

  • KE: Kiambu County: Information system will improve hospital management, chief officer says

    The Kiambu County Health department has designed an information system aimed at interlinking hospitals with the county digital platform.

    A total of 13 level 4 hospitals and The Thika Level 5 Hospital are set to be involved in the project.

    This was revealed by the Kiambu County Chief Officer for Health Steven Njuguna during the annual awarding of Thika level 5 staff at the institution

    The Kiambu county government is injecting Sh10 billion towards elevation of Thika to become an industrial smart city.

    In collaboration with the national administration the regional government will be allocating Sh1 billion annually for infrastructure development in support of the project which has been allocated 690 acres ceded by food processor Del Monte.

  • KE: Kisumu: Nyong’o elected to lead African Smart Cities Caucus

    Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has been elected to chair the newly established Africa Smart Cities Alliance (ASCA).

    The announcement follows the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the County Government of Kisumu and the World Smart Cities Alliance, marking Kisumu’s formal entry into the ASCA network.
