  • MY: Free WiFi: Government Provides While Opposition Continues Making Promises

    There is nothing new in a promise made by opposition parties to provide free WiFi Internet service for the people. Such a service was planned by the government, some time ago, part of which has already been implemented.

    In fact, the service infrastructure provided and will be provided by the government is extended to rural areas, and not just focused on urban and suburban areas as promised by the opposition in its master plan, dubbed the Orange Book.

    An information, communication and technology (ICT) enthusiast, Muhammad Nizam Ismail, said the plan by the opposition was just an attempt to pull the wool over the people's eyes because it knew the service was already made available in most areas.

    Thursday launch of new identifi cation system for expats, with security features including

    A new identification system for expatriates in the country will be implemented by the government from  Thursday.

    Called I-Pass, the new system is an improvement and will replace the current I-Kad system, The Malay Mail has learnt.

    Similar in nature to the MyKad, the I-Pass will have security measures embedded, including biometric data.

    In a move towards the development of smart cities in Malaysia, Gamuda Land has announced a collaboration with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), marking a key step in enhancing 5G connectivity and infrastructure within its townships.

    The partnership, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), aims to explore the full spectrum of 5G technology possibilities, focusing on Gamuda Cove @ Kuala Langat, Gamuda Gardens @ Sungai Buloh North and twentyfive7 @ South of Kota Kemuning.

  • MY: Georgetown gets faster public Wi-Fi service

    Penang state in Malaysia increases public Wi-Fi bandwidth by five times.

    Residents of Georgetown city in Malaysia can now access free public Wi-Fi at twice the speeds.

    Penang state announced that the public Wi-Fi bandwidth has been increased from 75Mbps to 375 Mbps. This allows each user to enjoy speeds upto 1Mbps, up from 512Kbps in the past, in Georgetown city and across the state.

    The Government through the Education Ministry, is the first in the world to implement the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) Malaysia for all public universities (IPTAs).

    Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said although MOOCs can be found in nations worldwide, MOOCs Malaysia is the first to be implemented by a nation’s government.

  • MY: Government helping rural communities with ICT

    The government has helped the community, especially those in the rural areas by expanding the opportunity available in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

    Sukau assemblyman Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman said the government, through the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), had distributed various ICT facilities in the Kinabatangan area.

    “Among the distribution were 2,000 units of the 1 Malaysia netbook to rural students, the establishment of four community broadband centres here at Pekan Kinabatangan, Bukit Garam, Sukau, and Paris 1 village. Besides that, two other villages, namely Suan Lamba and Kampung Paris 3 were involved in Wifi facilities,” he said.

  • MY: Government to use open tender system for projects, says works minister

    Putrajaya will use the open tender system extensively for government projects, especially for large scale ones, to make sure that public funds are well spent, Bernama reported Minister of Works Baru Bian saying today.

    He revealed that the government was estimated to spend more than RM100 billion a year for procurement purposes through various projects and contracts.

    A comprehensive plan on the fourth industrial revolution (IR4.0) and digital roadmap will be announced by month-end in an effort to ensure Malaysians have access to better connectivity with a wider coverage.

    Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah (picture) said the government will focus on five components for the roadmap which are digital talent development, emerging technology, the economic prospects along with the society and governmental part of it.

    Although the government has successfully operated online services, it has to rethink whether they are still relevant, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Sidek Hassan said today.

    "I recognise that we have implemented many E-Government applications nationwide over the years. (But) just because it is E-something, it doesn't make it relevant for all time," he said when delivering a key note address entitled 'Waking Up With Tomorrow's Mind' at the National ICT Conference 2011 here.

  • MY: Govt’s digitalisation agenda the growth catalyst for tech sector

    E-government service providers could be seeing more jobs in the pipeline as the government intends to pursue digitalisation agenda “aggressively” for higher digital adoption in the public service.

    “In this regard, digital governance in the public sector will be enhanced at the national and ministry levels to support the national digitalisation agenda,” said the Mid-Term Review of the 11th Malaysia Plan 2016-2020 report released yesterday.

  • MY: Home Ministry: Problems with biometric system being identified

    JOHOR BARU: The Home Ministry has established a special committee to identify problems faced by the biometric system introduced early this month. Secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam said the committee would ensure that the system, placed at 61 locations nationwide, worked without major hitches.

    Mahmood said problems in implementation of the system at Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex and the Tanjong Kupang CIQ in Gelang Patah had been resolved by the ministry.

    Imagine a city where citizens can monitor in real time the location of buses or trains and authorities can do real-time surveillance of roads or traffic conditions. Officers are deployed immediately to fix broken traffic lights, potholes or broken pipes. Most processes, whether it is paying for parking or applying for licences, can be done online. And roads and new developments are built only after proper data analysis.

    This is an ideal that smart cities around the world aim to reach. In general, smart cities use technology to improve the quality of life of their dwellers, develop a safe environment and increase economic opportunities for them.

    The Sabah state government is roping in Huawei Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd to accelerate its digital transformation initiatives.

    It has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Huawei Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd at the company’s Huawei headquarters here on Nov 11.

    Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who witnessed the signing of the agreement during his trade visit to China, said the partnership was a significant leap towards a digital future for Sabah.

    i-City Properties (i-City) will collaborate with China Mobile International (Malaysia) (CMIM) to construct the country's first smart green corporate tower in i-City, Malaysia No. 1 technology city.

    According to Monica Ong, director of i-City, the corporate tower will be outfitted with 5G internet-enabled cameras and sensors to monitor the environment, energy consumption, and human traffic flow for data collection purposes.

    The i-City smart city project in Selangor is a good role model that others should try to emulate, according to Datuk Teng Chang Khim, Selangor state executive councillor for industry and trade.

    "I first encountered i-City when I was representing the squatters here. I am very proud of the development's success over the years, and I believe it will undoubtedly position Selangor as a major player in the development of digitalisation.

    UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the varsity intends to extend its WiFi coverage to the varsity’s surrounding areas so as to reduce the digital divide that exists.

    The government expects ICT services and eCommerce to be the largest contributors to the Malaysia Digital Economy, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

    This, he added, is to achieve its aspirational goal of 17 per cent contribution to the country's gross domestic product.

    He said Digital Malaysia will address with a holistic framework, four pilot applications for societal and government purposes, and a fund for economic Big Data Analytics (BDA) to drive ICT services.

  • MY: Immigration project value based on number of illegal workers registered,says MyEG

    E-government service provider MyEG Services Bhd (MyEG) said the project awarded by the Immigration Department to register illegal foreign workers does not have a fixed value as it depends on the number of illegal workers successfully registered.

    Subject to the number successfully registered, the project is expected to contribute positively to the net assets per share of the group as well as becoming an additional revenue stream, said MyEG in its filing on Bursa Malaysia today.
