Soon citizens will be able to obtain driver's licences at Jordan Post Company (JPC) offices, the JPC announced on Tuesday.

JPC media consultant Zuhair Al Azzeh said they expect to finalise an agreement with the Public Security Department to implement the plan within the next two weeks.

"The new service will allow citizens to get their private driver's licences as well as renew their car registration from any of our JPC branches," Azzeh said.

Optimiza, a regional technology solutions and management consulting services company, and the Ministry of Information & Communications Technology (MoICT) / the e-Government program recently announced the signing of an agreement that stipulates the development of an electronic service that facilitates the issuance and renewal of vocational licenses in the country. The development comes as part of the e-government initiative launched by the MoICT in line with HM King Abdullah II’s directives.

The Kingdom is developing an integrated tourism statistical information system that will provide the public with access to reliable, consistent and relevant data on the sector.

The National Tourism Statistics System (NTSS), being developing at the Ministry of Tourism with the support of USAID/Siyaha, will incorporate and process data generated by all relevant entities in one integrated system.

Starting December, cellular phone subscribers will be receiving SMSs informing them, for example, that their driving licence would expire in a certain period of time, or that they should report to a certain public agency to complete some business with the government.

The new service will be provided under a project implemented by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology. It involves a total of 15 public agencies and ministries that will send short messages to cellular phones related to announcements and services offered by these agencies, according to Director of e-Government Programme Hassan Horani.

Around a third of Jordanian households have PCs, but only 16 per cent of these are connected to the Internet, a study said.

Announcing the findings of a survey conducted by the Department of Statistics (DoS), ICT Minister Bassem Roussan and DoS Director General Ghazi Shbaikat, noted that 73 per cent of those connected use the Internet for personal purposes, whereas 17 per cent are connected to the World wide Web for reasons related to their work.
