Taxpayers can now turn to e-services at the website of the Income and Sales Tax Department to learn about any information regarding their taxes, the government announced on Monday.

The website, believed to be the first of its kind in the region, also allows taxpayers to pay their taxes online.

Work has started on the second phase of the "Secure Government Network" (SGN) that will connect 12 governmental departments by April 2005 to increase coordination, reduce bureaucracy and provide the adequate infrastructure for future e-government services.

The Ministry of Finance aims at "implementing a fiscal management that is efficient and effective" under a new vision formulated recently by Finance Minister Mohammad Abu Hammour and senior officials of his ministry.

According to the minister, the mission is "to provide for development needs of the Kingdom through securing financial resources, determining the expenditure priorities, administering the public debt, managing transactions and commitments as well as offering suitable services for the public and private sectors in a way that would contribute to the improvement of the standard of living of the citizens."

18 government departments will now be added to Jordan's e-government network, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

Six departments are already connected to the Wide Area Network, representing 650 users, but with the planned expansion up to 15,000 government employees will be able to access the network. The network is being managed by the E-Government Operations Centre at the National Information Technology Centre

The Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MoICT) yesterday announced that 18 governmental departments would be connected in a network by the end of this year.

Khaldoun Naffaa, head of the e-Government Programme Management Office, told The Jordan Times the step is designed to provide the adequate infrastructure for implementing e-Government services.
