In a keynote presentation at Merchant Payments Ecosystem 2024 in Berlin, Hemlata Narasimhan, president of Elavon explored what a smart city could look like in 2030, using Venice, Italy as a case study.
The presentation started with an AI of Venice as a smart city speaking to the audience from the future, explaining how it can charge people automatically for congestion, allow tourists to book and pay for gondola rides using biometric technology, and control autonomous electric vehicles as they drive around the city and charge.
UK-headquartered neutral host provider Boldyn Networks has signed a deal with Roma Capitale, the municipal government covering the Italian capital plus 120 other municipalities around the city of Rome, to deploy 5G and Wi-Fi infrastructure across the Lazio region to support its ‘smart-city’ ambitions. The project includes IoT sensors for environmental across the city and for traffic monitoring at major intersections.
The project, called Roma5G (#Roma5G), will deliver a neutral-host 5G network to all the city’s metro lines, including 83 stations and 68 kilometres of tunnels. It will cover 2,200 small cells, 850 public Wi-Fi access points, 1,800 IoT sensors, and 2,000 5G CCTV cameras. The infrastructure will be open to all 4G/5G frequency bands and all mobile network operators. A statement said the new network will provide “full connectivity in all of Rome’s busiest locations, increase public safety, and enable smart services”.

Italy’s Digital Transformation is well underway as it strives to make its cities smarter. Telecommunications provider, TIM, which is based in the country, is contributing to this development. Supporting its plans is the European Investment Bank as it helps to advance urban regeneration, the redevelopment and energy efficiency of public buildings and the advancement of sustainable mobility in Florence.
Smart cities lie at the heart of Italy’s digitisation process. The first Italy of smart and sustainable cities report, drawn up by the TIM Research Centre with the ‘Smart City’ and ‘Startup Intelligence’ Observatories of Politecnico di Milano and the CNR Department of Engineering, ICT and Technology for Energy and Transport, was recently presented in Rome.

The Italian municipality is working with micromobility provider Tier to deploy 150 e-scooters via mandatory parking zones as part of a one-year trial period.
Tier Mobility has announced it is introducing 150 e-scooters in the Italian city of Arezzo, Tuscany, to help boost sustainable transport options.
The company was the sole operator selected by the municipality of Arezzo and will provide the service for a one-year trial period. The 150 e-scooters are positioned in the 68 mandatory parking zones available in the city.

Smart Cities at the center of the digitalization process of the country system. The first report was presented today in Rome ‘Italy of smart and sustainable cities’ created by the TIM Study Center in collaboration with the ‘Smart City’ and ‘Startup Intelligence’ Observatories of the Milan Polytechnic and with the Department of Engineering, ICT and Technologies for Energy and Transport of the CNR.
Pietro Labriola, Chief Executive Officer, opened the meeting and together with Elio Schiavo, TIM Chief Enterprise and Innovative Solutions Officer, illustrated the development prospects of Smart Cities in Italy and the digital services that the Group makes available to the Public Administration and local authorities. The mayor of Assisi Stefania Proietti and the General Manager of Technological and Digital Innovation of the Municipality of Milan Guido Arnone also took part in the event to discuss what has already been achieved and the future of two different but very important cities.
